Jack Kurin CPA, CA – Founding Partner
Jack founded the Firm to implement his vision of providing high quality service to a variety of business clients, including owner-managers and professionals. Areas of interest include personal and corporate tax planning, and business advisory services.
When out of the office, Jack enjoys travel, leisurely walks with Susan, and the occasional low-stake poker game.
Gary Friedlander CPA, CA – Managing Partner
Gary began his accounting profession working for the big 4 firms, immigrating to Canada in 1986 with Deloitte. After spending some time in industry as a controller, he joined Kurin and Partners. His clients cover a wide range of industries, with a focus on medical professionals, and he applies his considerable experience advising them on tax and financial planning, as well as business management.
Outside work Gary enjoys time with his family, playing chess golf and tennis, travelling, skiing and gardening.
Susan Kurin CPA, CA – Partner
Susan joined her husband Jack in 1983 to form the firm of Kurin and Partners. Surprisingly after working together for so many years, they are still happily married. In her 30 years of experience, Susan has assisted many owner managed businesses in the implementation and the proper use of an appropriate accounting system. Susan has also been a great sounding board for her clients and has assisted them in solving a variety of business issues.
When not working, Susan enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, travelling, playing table tennis and taking long walks.
Paul Schmid CPA, CA – Partner
Paul employs over 20 years of professional experience in advising clients on tax, assurance, business startup, acquisition, and estate planning. His experience encompasses years spent both in public practice and in private industry.
In his spare time, Paul loves playing with his grade school twins, is an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast, and his hobbies include photography, martial arts, and target shooting.
Sakina Raza CPA, CA – Senior Associate/Manager
Sakina obtained her BMath in Business Administration and Risk Management from the University of Waterloo. She joined Kurin and Partners in 2009, then earned her CPA, CA designation shortly thereafter. Through participating in and now leading engagements, she has gained extensive experience with the firm’s diverse client base.
Away from work Sakina enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants with friends, exploring Toronto, and is a Bikram hot yoga enthusiast.
Derek Turner CPA, CA
After gaining valuable experience in a few large accounting firms, Derek joined Kurin and Partners in 2013. Derek has a wide range of experience in tax, consulting and assurance services, with a particular focus on healthcare professionals and owner managed businesses.
Derek particularly enjoys opportunities to offer management consulting to clients so they can better understand, manage and grow their business. When not at the office, Derek likes to play guitar and is an avid hockey fan.
Matthew Young CPA, CA
With an original focus on Finance, Matthew joined the Accounting world with an intention to help small business owners create tangible, long lasting benefits through tax and business planning. Matthew has broad experience in corporate and personal tax, and is focused on providing assurance services to our clients.
Matthew prefers to spend his leisure time hiking and travelling. He enjoys travelling to experience new cultures and food, and aims to summit more mountains.
Troy Pinto CPA
Troy has been with Kurin and Partners for 10 years and has over 10 years of work experience in the accounting and finance industry, both in corporate and in public practice.
When time permits, his favorite past times include spending time with his family, golfing, fishing, and playing various sports.
Andrea Mok CPA
Andrea attended the University of Waterloo where she obtained her Bachelors of Accounting and Financial Management. She has several years of professional experience under her belt, and has gained extensive knowledge on the topic of SR&ED while working for a tax consulting firm.
In her down time, she enjoys attending music events around Toronto, cooking, and spending time with friends.
Joy Vassell CPB
Joy has over 15 years of experience as a bookkeeper for both not-for-profit and for-profit businesses. She is a certified QuickBooks desktop and online ProAdvisor with a comprehensive knowledge of Sage and Wave accounting systems. Joy has helped a wide variety of companies implement, standardize and refine their payroll and bookkeeping processes.
When not in the office, she enjoys camping, organizing children’s programs in the community and spending time with her young family.

Deborah is pleased to be able to call Kurin and Partners her work home for over 6 years now, after gaining significant experience in payroll and administration with both owner-managed, and large, international professional corporations.
When not working, she can be found antique hunting, gathering with family and friends, and relishing the joys and challenges of home ownership.
John graduated with an accounting degree from Western University. He joined Kurin and Partners as an accounting student where he is developing his skills to become a seasoned tax preparer.
Outside the office, he likes to play video games with friends and binge watch his favourite TV shows.
Rainie obtained her Bachelors of Business Administration at Brock University. She has several years of experience in administration, bookkeeping, and personal tax while working in public practice. She is a candidate for the CPA designation.
Outside the office, she enjoys travelling, shopping, watching TV, and spending time with family and friends.
Rahil recently graduated from Wilfred Laurier University with a BBA and is currently pursuing the CPA designation, with plans of writing the CFE in 2019. He is excited to start his accounting career with Kurin and Partners.
Outside the office, he enjoys going on long drives, playing and watching basketball, and finding new shows to binge on Netflix.
Peter joined Kurin and Partners as a new accounting student and candidate for the CPA designation. He is developing his knowledge by working on bookkeeping, file preparation and tax returns.
Outside the office, he likes to travel and eat food from different cultures.
